Overview

Research tool for field studies in online social networks.

ROSE is a web browser extension for Google Chrome allowing to conduct academic empirical research about usage of social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, or Google+. To this end, the extension collects and stores data about interactions with these social media sites locally in the extension storage of Google Chrome. Users can read out this data and can send it to researchers while participating in an academic study if they wish to do so. ROSE also implements a workflow for setting up social media studies with ROSE, allows to create tailored ROSE configuration files, and provides additional data analysis tools. Privacy Note: ROSE collects data about your interactions with online social media for the purpose of participating in an empirical study, or for personal purposes. All data collected is stored only locally in your web browser. The software does not transmit any tracking data over the Internet to other servers, and also locally stored data is anonymized. To disable the tracking functions of ROSE go to the settings menu and use the 'tracking on/off' switch. Information on the Use of Overlays: ROSE adds overlays to social media sites such as Facebook thereby enabling the user to take notes on content he or she encounters online. These overlays are a red ribbon with the caption 'Comment' and a sliding-in graphical user interface to manage notes, see pictures below. All data entered to text fields in these overlays is store locally only just like any other data collected by ROSE. Disabling the tracking function also disables all overlays.
