Look up bird species using the Institute of Bird Population's 4-letter alpha codes, or vice-versa.
Four-letter alpha codes are a quick and easy shorthand to refer to bird species in online discussions. But sometimes they get a little bit overwhelming.
If you encounter an alpha code you're not familiar with, use Goldeneye to quickly and accurately identify what bird holds that code. Goldeneye also displays a list of species with potentially confusing alpha codes.
Goldeneye supports all species, subspecies, hybrids, etc. included in the Institute of Bird Population's (IBP) list. While the Bird Banding Laboratory (BBL) initiated the use of alpha codes for submission of banding encounter data, IBP's list is now the standard for more general uses in North/Central America and Jamaica.
All BBL codes that differ from IBP codes are also included. BBL-only species are not included yet, but we hope to add support for those species soon!
