Minimise dopamine production while using the internet
--- PURPOSE ---
This extension aims to improve your attention and productivity while using the internet by hiding all videos, images, even colour. The extension still allows you to view these things but in specific ways as to not let you slip back into old habits.
--- HOW IT WORKS ---
- All images, videos, and colour are disabled on each page by default.
- Using Shift while hovering over an image/video will make it visible while hovering.
- Using Alt while hovering over an image/video will make it visible for the remainder of the time you're on a page.
- Keyboard shortcuts or options from the extension icon allow you to show images/videos/colour for 10 seconds or for the remainder of the time you're on a page.
--- WHY IT WORKS ---
The internet is full of novel visual information(images/videos/bright colours) which the brain absolutely loves. Each time the brain sees something it likes dopamine is released to reinforce the behaviour. The more your brain likes what it sees the more dopamine that is released.
However, large dopamine increases are followed by deficits in dopamine below baseline. These deficits can result in agitation and anxiety and a strong desire to repeat the behaviour that caused the dopamine spike. Continuing this cycle leads to tolerance and possibly addiction.
Since images and videos are such strong dopamine producers hiding them will greatly reduce the addictive potential of any website.
